13 août 1977 - The Dutch vessel Witte Leeuw was found

Description:

In the year 1977, the Dutch vessel Witte Leeuw (White Lion), was found after going missing over 150 years earlier. The ship was carrying cargo, such as nutmeg, cloves, and diamonds, that belonged to the Dutch East India Company. Witte Leeuw was lost in the early 1600s, off the Island of St. Helena, after an unfortunate defeat in a battle with the Portuguese. Robert Stenuit’s discovery of the lost vessel was the largest discovery of its time, and several items from the ship were recovered, including cannons, pepper, and porcelain.
I chose this event because it was a major event and I was interested in learning more about it. Because of the significance of the event, I could find plenty of information on this vessel’s discovery. The website Saint Helena Island Info was especially helpful in supplementing the information I found in the textbook. The materials recovered from the ship are very relevant to this class, so I thought it was a great way to start out my timeline.
