Painted elk hide, attributed to Cotsiogo (Cadzi Cody) Eastern Shoshone, Wind River Reservation, Wyoming. Longstanding tradition of Great Basin and Great Plains tribes.
The function is to record history. Used natural pigments along with pigments obtained through trade. Freehand and stenciling. Painted by both men and women. Men associated with imagery on tepees, clothing and shields.
Sun Dance is to honor Creator Deity for earth’s bounty and to ensure bounty (outlawed until 1935). Activities of daily life and Buffalo.
