jan 1, 1811 - The Wahhabi Movement

Description:

Conservative Muslim clerics who were influential due to their monopoly on education and involvement in legal affairs mistrusted the Ottoman emperors' interest in unconventional forms of Islam such as Sufism, complained about the influence of women and protested the usage of royal authority which contradicted Islamic law. Religious students and Janissaries would often rise up in revolt. The Wahhabi Movement in Arabia denounced the Ottomans as religious innovators who were unfit to rule.
