jul 16, 1788 - Henry David Thoreau: Resistance to the Civil Government

Description:

**CHANGE YEAR**
Henry David Thoreau was a man who thought people should follow their consciences, and what they thought was right, instead of blindly following the government. He stated "There will never be a really free and enlightened state, until state comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power"(Thoreau, 897). Really hitting the point of individuality. Thoreau also mentions the importance of being self-reliant. Making a claim that the government just slows down our progress. He voices his opposition to things such as slavery and the Mexican war. The purpose of him writing was a call to action. He believed that we, as individuals have power to make change, peaceful protests and small acts such as that. He did not condone violence. He said "Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it"(Thoreau, 886). Showing his clear distrust with the government. Furthermore, he refused to accept the government as his government with the reasoning; "I cannot for an instant recognize that political organization as my government which is the slaves government also"(Thoreau, 884). His individuality staying true to his beliefs and fighting for what he thought was right is how he made his mark on shaping the American identity. Even going to jail for refusing to pay a tex. He was strong minded and confident enough to put his ideas out there and that helped America grow.
