Edgar Allan Poe's work "The Fall of the House of Usher" was a twisting tale. There were so many hidden elements throughout the story using symbolism and darkness to guide the reader through. Using sentences such as "I know not how it was - but, with the first glimpse of the building a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit"(Poe, 678). As well as"An air of stern, deep, and irredeemable gloom hung over and pervaded all"(Poe, 680). The imagery and feeling that Poe gives to readers guides them along the story and not only tells them how to feel but guides them in feeling it themselves. Poe helped to contribute to the American identity in writing by his style. He mastered macabre and made major pioneering contributions to the genres of horror and detective fiction.
