aug 29, 480 BC - Battle of Salamis
Description:
A naval battle part of the Persian Wars that took place in the Saronic Gulf of Greece, close to the island of Salamis, shortly after the Battle of Thermopylae. The Persian fleet consisted of around 800 galleys, outnumbering the Greeks' 370 triremes. Despite this, Greek forces managed to defeat approximately 300 Persian ships and only lost 40 of their own. The defeat led King Xerxes to delay the Persians' planned land offensives for a year.
