may 1, 1492 - Columbian Exchange
Description:
Massive biological exchange between the New and Old Worlds. Europe -- and, by extension, other regions of Afroeurasia -- acquired potatoes, tomatoes, syphilis, and maize, whereas the New World was primarily exposed to new diseases such as smallpox and malaria, which devastated indigenous populations. This exchange enabled massive population growth in Europe and conquests in the Americas.
