Depicted as "typographical art", these emoticons were featured in an article written by the American satirical magazine, Puck. The exact context of isn't entirely known, but Puck wrote, "We mean to let the public see what we can lay out, in our own typographical line, all the cartoonists that ever walked" (Wollaston, 2015).
