jan 1, 2014 - Great Emoji Politicization began
Description:
Controversy over featured emojis started to heat up this year especially. Many people were angry/offended at the lack of diversity in emojis - both in terms of skin color, gender, and profession.
For example, for the longest time there were multiple emojis representing Mexican food such as tacos and burritos. However, there weren't any emojis representing African cuisine. Family units were not accurately portrayed with the rise in LGBTQ inclusion, and there was Unicode for all the flags we have access to now.
Since then, Unicode and other developers have been working to meet the needs of everyone, starting with the release of iOS 8.3 and the ability to change the emoji's skin tone (Pardes, 2018).
