jul 17, 2014 - First World Emoji Day is celebrated
Description:
World Emoji Day was first celebrated in 2014 and was created by Emojipedia's Jeremy Burge. He says that the holiday is meant to be a global celebration of emoji and that the date was inspired by the date the calendar emoji uses on iPhones.
In 2016, Sony Pictures used it to announce The Emoji Movie, Google used it to release a new set of emojis that included women of more diverse backgrounds, and Emojipedia launched the first Emoji Awards.
In 2017, Apple announced a new set of emojis and the Empire State Building was lit in "emoji yellow" (Alonso, 2017).
