Gmail releases two new features of their chat function - group chat and emoticons! A smiley face was added to the bottom right corner of the chat menu that allows you to change the style of the emoticons being sent out (Solyanik, 2007).

In October 2008, the Gmail team added a brand new set of emoticons that could be included in emails being sent out (in addition to the text :) or :P). This set was also added to the chat menu (Lewis, 2008).

In April 2009, the team released "Extra Emoji" which included a larger variety of emoticons, such as animals and food. In order to access this, however, you had to go into the Lab tab under settings and and enable the feature (Lewis, 2009).
