Oxford Dictionary chose the face with tears emoji as their word of the year! 2015 saw a huge spike in emoji usage according to a report by SwiftKey (a mobile technology business that partnered with Oxford to analyze this year's emoji data) and the face with tears emoji was the most used emoji internationally (“Word of the Year 2015 | Oxford Dictionaries.”). Oxford's president Caspar Grathwohl explained that emoji have been an increasingly popular form of communication that "transcends linguistic borders." He also added that he felt the face with tears emoji was a excellent choice since it "embodies the playfulness and intimacy that characterizes emoji-using culture" (Steinmetz, Katy).
