-69 killed (+186 injured) at PAC non-violent protest against passbooks outside police station

-police said protesters threw stones etc. at police, but bodies were facing away from police station - shot while running away

-consequences: violence at protests (deaths of protesters) spread to other parts of the country, ANC + PAC banned (forced into underground action), beginning of international opposition to + pressure on apartheid government (e.g. economic sanctions)
