The government of the democratically-elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh is overthrown in a coup after the Iranian parliament voted to nationalize the oil industry that had been dominated by British corporations.
To protect their oil interests in the nation, Winston Churchill, the Eisenhower administration, MI6 and the CIA conspired to install the shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. He would reign over a corrupt and brutal government until the Iranian revolution of 1979.
