jan 1, 2016 - Expantion to The University of South Florida

Description:

The University of South Florida's Facility for Outdoor Research and Training (FORT) is part of the Florida Institute for Forensic Anthropology and Applied Science (IFAAS) and was established in 2016 by Erin H. Kimmerle, the Institute's Executive Director. Originally located on a 3.4-acre site in Pasco County, the facility has since relocated to a larger and more ecologically diverse area in Alachua County, outside of Gainesville. It is the first and only forensic anthropology research facility in Florida, uniquely situated in a subtropical environment. FORT is dedicated to advancing forensic science through the USF Human Donation Program, which provides human bodies for training students and law enforcement in clandestine burial detection, grave excavation, and outdoor crime scene processing. It also offers specialised training for mass grave excavation in human rights investigations.

FORT's outdoor research area, along with its ethically curated skeletal collection, supports a wide range of educational and scholarly activities. The facility is open to visiting researchers and scholars, fostering collaboration and innovation in forensic anthropology. Its work emphasises the development of techniques tailored to Florida's subtropical conditions, offering invaluable insights for law enforcement and forensic investigations in similar climates. As a pioneer in its field, FORT continues to contribute to forensic science education, research, and applied practice.
