jan 1, 2009 - Expansion to Sam Houston State University
Description:
The Southeast Texas Applied Forensic Science Facility (STAFS) at Sam Houston State University is a cutting-edge research and training center dedicated to advancing forensic science, particularly in studying human decomposition and evidence analysis. Recognised as a willed-body donor facilitiy by the Anatomical Board of Texas, STAFS accepts body donations for scientific research to improve crime scene investigation techniques. It provides specialised training for students, law enforcement, forensic specialists, and academicians, emphasisng the recognition, collection, and preservation of forensic evidence. Located within the university's 247-acre Center for Biological Field Studies, STAFS includes a one-acre outdoor research area surrounded by maximum-security fencing and an additional eight acres for forensic training exercises such as search-and-recovery maneuvers.
The facility features diverse environmental settings, including a fluvial environment, and is equipped with advanced morgue capabilities, such as cooler and freezer units, digital radiography, and microscopes. Webcams monitor postmortem changes, enabling on- and off- campus research. The southeast Texas climate, with a higher mean annual temperature of 75°F (23°C) compared to East Tennessee's 67°F (19°C), significantly influences decomposition rates, providing unique research opportunities. STAFS's contributions to forensic science enhance the understanding of regional decomposition processes and strengthen the application of forensic techniques to criminal investigations.
