jan 1, 1981 - Establishment of the First Body Farm

Description:

The University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, commonly known as the Body Farm, is located behind the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxvile. Established in 1981 by forensic anthropologist Dr. William M. Bass, the facility was created to study the decomposition of human remains under various conditions. Spanning 2.5 acres and surrounded by a razor-wire fence, the site places bodies in diverse scenarios, sich as being locked in car trunks or submerged underwater, to better understand decompostion processes and their forensic implications. Observations focus on the stages of human decomposition - fresh, bloat, decay, and dry - and document the effects of environmental factors and insect activity.

Each year, over 100 bodies are donated to the facility, with 60% coming from family member of individuals who were not pre-registered. More than 1,300 people have pre-registered to donate their bodies, including notable anthropologist Grover Krantz. In addition to research, the Body Farm serves as a training ground for law enforcement officers, equipping them with scene-of-crime skills and techniques. Its contributions to forensic science have provided crucial insights that aid in solving police cases involving decomposed remains.
