dec 15, 1909 - General Leonard Wood, originally an army surgeon, is named to be Army Chief of Staff (effective in April 1910) by Secretary of War Dickinson. He had been personal physician to Presidents Cleveland and McKinley. He becomes a prominent and controversial advocate of military preparedness. President Harding in 1921 appoints him as Governor General of the Philippines
