feb 22, 1897 - Proclaimed the creation of 13 new national forest reserves in eight western states totalling 21 million acres. This was nearly twice the total acreage in existing forest reserves. Subsequently these were referred to as the "Washington's Birthday Reserves." Cleveland acted pursuant to a law passed on March 3, 1891
