nov 3, 1874 - Midterm elections produce very large gains for Democrats in the House. Democrats gained 94 seats to achieve a 62% majority. This was the first Democratic majority in the House since the Civil War. Democrats had the majority in the House almost continuously until 1895. Republicans retained the Senate majority in 1874
