Description:

Carried the dog Laika into orbit. The Soviet Union never intended for Laika to survive the mission. She died a few minutes after launch from overheating and stress. The mission was meant to be a suicide mission since there was no technology to survive reentry into the atmosphere. The mission was meant to serve as a test on technology to survive in space.
