-north wanted to open up Indian territory in Great Plains to build a trans-continental railroad to link Chi to CA
-to win southern support, it repealed the Missouri Compromise to potentially enable slavery in areas further west
-formation of two new territories: Nebraska and Kansas
-caused northerners, especially Whigs up to stand against slavery
-crippled Democratic Party -> former Democrats joined ex-Whigs and Free Soil supporters to form the Republican party
-proslavery Missouri residents went to Kansas to vote for a proslavery legislation in Kansas -> enraged Kansas residents who favored free soil
