dec 31, 1849 - Crisis and Compromise over Slavery in the West
Description:
-crisis of slavery reached California -> became a free state
Solutions for slavery in the West:
1. creation of a dual presidency between North and South; support of slavery in territories; deep resentment for the North's opposition to slavery; great support in Deep South
2. southerners wanted to extend Missouri Compromise to the Pacific Ocean; potentially guarantee slave owners access to some western territory
3. squatter/ popular sovereignty - allowed newcomers in the territory to decide the status of slavery; placed ultimate power in hands of voters
4. free soilers and opponents of slavery refused to allow slavery all together
