Portuguese merchants to withdraw from the Kongo in search of more lucrative financial opportunities in Ndongo (Angola). Portuguese merchants founded a small coastal colony in Ndongo where they formed alliances with locals who would deliver them war captives as slaves. Portuguese campaigned in Ndongo in an effort to establish a large colony to support the slave trade. Queen Nzinga led spirited resistance against Portuguese encroachment. However, when she died, the Portuguese began to tighten their control over Angola which became the first European colony in sub-Saharan Africa.
