Description:

In mid-June 1776, a five-man committee including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin was assigned with drafting a formal statement of the colonies’ needs. Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence -which was mostly written by Thomas Jefferson- in Philadelphia on July 4, now a date we celebrate as the beginning of America’s independence. It was read publicly on July 8, 1776.
