The Tariff of Abominations was like a protective tariff which is like putting tariffs on foreign goods and products in order to people buying own country's product that will result in the prices going up..
The Tariff of Abominations benefited manufacturing industries in the North,, and led to a high interest rate. Meanwhile it was bad for southerners because they had to pay higher for the products.
Southerners called it the Tariff of Abominations because they feared that foreign countries would enact raw materials produced in the South.
In response to it the British reduced their exports to the US, leading to the US having less money to pay for US imports.
The Idea of Nullification was the declaration of a Federal law as null and void with in state borders. South Carolina was the place that promoted this idea by saying that they will not pay these types of taxes.
Causes:
- South Carolina begin to null Federal tariffs.
- John Quincy Adams said that it was the supreme court who could make a law unconstitutional.
- Tariffs were made to favor manufacturing industries.
- Many people in the South started to being fraustrated by Andrew Jackson who did not reduce or cancel these types of taxes.
Effects:
- The British reduced exports to the US.
- Andrew Jackson lowered the tariffs for South Carolina.
- Andrew Jackson signed the Force Bill which authorized the compulsory collection of import duties from south by force of arm if necessary.
