apr 5, 1764 - Sugar Act April 5, 1764

Description:

The Sugar Act, also known as the American Revenue Act, was passed by the British Parliament on April 5, 1764. The intention of the act was to end the smuggling trade of sugar and molasses from the French and Dutch West Indies and raise money to pay of England’s war debts. The act imposed a tax of three pennies per gallon of molasses imported into the colonies. This tax hurt both the rum industry in the colonies, which required molasses, and the trade between the colonies and the French West Indies, which was severely restricted by the Sugar Act.
