-due to France's defeat in Haiti, Jefferson decided to act (most likely because France was in debt from the war and needed money)
*the U.S. initially offered 2 million ONLY for navigational rights, but Napolean ended up offering the whole territory for 15 million
-was against Jeffersons views as a Democratic-Republican but he ended up agreeing, because [passing on this big of deal would be stupid, but this agreement ultimately ended up expanding federal power, exactly what Jefferson didn't want
-U.S. doubled in size
