jun 4, 1947 - All-Negro Comics
Description:
This comic features many African American characters, including Ace Harlem, a police detective. It includes action and adventure like many other comics that have come out before, during, and after this time. However, one of the things that make this comic special is that it was the first comic to be completely created by African Americans. It was also the first comic to have African American portrayals be done by African Americans. Before this, African Americans in comics weren’t really shown as important characters. They were often comic relief or had negative stereotypes in their character or appearance. This comic had a main cast composed of African Americans doing things that white characters would be doing in other comics, like being a detective. This went against the norm in the comic industry at the time, and even though only one issue was published, All-Negro Comics was a significant milestone in history, both for comics and African Americans, by putting positive portrayals of African Americans into the comic scene.
