Samson Occom was a philanthropist. He did what he could for others and was motivated by helping. His individualism was important because he branched away from preaching unity and hard work like the other colonial leaders had. Occom devoted his life to helping others, he served in many different roles. He was not only a teacher but also a healer, judge and counselor. He opened a school serving not only European children but also Native American children. Stressing the importance of education helping to establish how crucial education would be to the growing American Identity.
