Description:
Contextualization:
Prior to the peaceful Revolution, there were two parties who were in competition.
The Federalists: Mostly educated, lived in North, Rich, Bankers and industrial. Led by Alexander Hamilton
The Anti-Federalists: Later on change to Democratic-Republicans, Mostly farmers, lived in South, poor. Led by Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas Jefferson became the first Democratic-Republicans and third President of the US on March 4 ,1801. Before Thomas Jefferson, John Adams (the second president of the US), (was held in NY)who was a Federalist lost the election to Thomas Jefferson who was his rival. This was the first time in the history of the US that after changing from one Party to another Party no killing happened. That's why it is called a peaceful Revolution.
This was the first time in the history of the US that a Democratic-Republican was going to be the president, this gave the kind of power to the southern states who were Democratic-Republicans. As Democratic-Republicans did not want a strong central government rather than a strong state government, Thomas Jefferson decreased the size of the military. As long as Thomas Jefferson was the president, Democratic-Republicans gained many seats in the Senate.
