On Tuesday 24 August 2021, the Human Rights Council convened a special session to address the ‘serious human rights concerns and situation in Afghanistan.’ The request was jointly submitted by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan, as Coordinator of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan and enjoyed the official support of 29 member States and 60 observer States. This was the first special session convened by the Council to specifically address the human rights situation in the country.
