dec 26, 1516 - 1517 - German Martin Luther (Protestant Reformation)
Description:
Religion had become extremely corrupted at the time. Colonization and conquest has shown this evil and murderous side of the Europeans who through religion, got away with killing, robbing, raping among other atrocities.
Martin Luther, a German monk and professor, decided to defy the Catholic church accusing it of pure corruption; at the time, indulgences were a common practice. It consisted of people paying good sums of gold, goods or many, in exchange for God forgiving the sins of any living or dead person.
In 1517, Martin Luther posted on the door of the Wittenberg church his 95 theses, which basically explained all the evil and corruption supported by the church, and how religion should actually be conceived.
This lead to a major movement of Protestants or Lutherans supporting three main key ideas or beliefs:
The sole authority of scripture: it was strongly believed that the bible was the sole and utmost authority in matters of faith, life and conduct.
Sola fide (justification by faith alone): it maintains we are justified before God by faith alone, not by anything we do (indulgences), not by anything anyone else does for us.
Priesthood of all believers: it was sustained we all have access to God through Christ, and we don’t need an earthy mediator.
