By December of 1598, natives grew resentful of the Spanish and they rebelled, killing some Spanish soldiers and infuriating Oñate. During 3 days, the Spanish killed 500 Pueblo men and 300 women. The Spanish would cut off one foot of the survivors to instill fear and prevent Pueblo people from escaping
