jan 15, 1598 - 1598 - Juan de Oñate (New Mexico)

Description:

In 1598, Juan de Oñate with Mexican Indians and mestizos, took possession of New Mexico and established a capital north of current day Santa Fe. They promised the natives that Spanish dominion would bring them peace and bliss; and religion would even provide far greater benefits. Some natives saw the Spanish as some sort of witchers capable of easing their burdens. Others used the Spanish as allies against rival tribes. Whereas others had no other alternative but to submit.
