jan 1, 1492 - Descobrimento da América, Cristóvão Colombo, 1492
Description:
Christopher Columbus was a Genoese merchant who came to Portugal around the year 1476.
Columbus learned the art of navigation and gathered information about the possibility of the existence of territories west of the Azores. To this knowledge he added the information that the Earth was round, which is why he planned a possible journey to reach India by sea from the west.
The Genoese navigator left on August 3, 1492, shortly afterwards discovering a new continent: the future America. The first contacts were made with the islands of S. Salvador (Bahamas), Cuba and Haiti, in the Antilles (or Caribbean) archipelago.
