Description:

Britain, compelled by the treaty to defend Belgium, protested to the German Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg on 4 August 1914. He, infamously, dismissed the treaty (of 1839) as 'a scrap of paper' and later the same day Britain declared war on Germany.
