jun 30, 1892 - Homestead Strike (1892)

Description:

When industrialist Henry Frick, acting for Carnegie Steel (run by Andrew Carnegie), cut wages and stopped negotiating with union leaders, workers at the Homestead plant walked off the job. As a response, Frick hired the Pinkertons, a private army of hired thugs, to break the strike. After a 12-hour battle that left seven workers dead, the strike was violently suppressed. The public was outraged by Carnegie Steel's actions, because they believed it was unfair for large corporations to silence labor movements this violently.
