may 1, 1950 - End of Chinese Civil War - Teresa

Description:

Despite aid from America to the Nationalist party run by Chiang Kai- Shek, the communist party took control of China. This was possible because of the poor military planning and corruption within the Nationalist party. The Nationalist Party was forced to flee to Taiwan and sign a treaty that united them with the rest of China. The success of communism shocked Americans and the rest of the world, making them realize the influence that the USSR had over countries during the Cold War. It also forced the US to have to use it's power to keep the Communist People's Republic of China out of the UN while still keeping the Republic of China's seat to insure that the US had the upper hand in world affairs as the Cold War progressed.
