Who: Tim Berners-Lee and the rise of those first web browsers.

What: In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee developed the first web browser, called the World Wide Web (or Nexus). This browser was developed alongside the first web server for NeXT computers from CERN. Nicola Pellow, a math student intern at CERN in 1991 created the Line Mode Browser as one of his cross-platform web browsers displaying documents on old terminals.

When: March 1991 marked the debut of WorldWideWeb at CERN, along with May in which Line Mode Browser was released. After that, in 1993 the NCSA Mosaic browser was created at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which contributed to the rise web’s popularity.

It turned the World Wide Web into a global resource, which was before used by scientists and academics.
