jan 1, 1804 - What does a loom have to do with CS history?
Description:
Who: Joseph Marie Jacquard invented the jacquards loop.
What: First, the Jacquard loom is significant in computer science history because it was the first machine that used interchangeable punch cards to control mechanism and this time a weaving mill for creating complex patterns on fabric.
When: The Jacquard system was created in 1804-1805.
Why is this important in the history of CS?: The Jacquard loom is important to computer science because it used punched cards that developed programmable machines and computers. Charles Babbage, the Analytical Engine creator, embraced a solution in which punched cards served as input and output mediums for his machine. Well into the mid-20 th century, this form of data input was found in digital computers.
