jan 1, 1751 - Academy of Philadelphia

Description:

Benjamin Franklin did not like the type of upper education that he was seeing and wanted to create a more open type of schooling. He created this academy that studied practical needs of the colony like math, navigation etc. This academy was not based on any religion and males and females both attended. Students were allowed to pick what classes they wanted like electives today. This school created the idea of choice in school like we have now. Now you can choose what classes interest you and take those and I believe that this is what sparked that choice.
