jan 1, 1785 - Land Ordinance of 1785
Description:
In 1785 the Land Ordinance was put into place to raise money for schools and other necessities. At this point in history, Congress did not have the right to tax citizens so they began to sell land in the west territories of the original colonies. This helped raise money for schooling using the government like we do today. Although this was good for the schools, it pushed Native Americans out of the land they were living in and continued to push them west. This hurt their culture and way of living because it pushed them off of their land and home. But it did benefit our schooling because the government started to help contribute to the schools.
