jan 1, 1932 - Tamara de Lempicka, 'Portrait of Marjorie Ferry, oil on canvas, 1932.

Description:

The popularity of Tamara de Lempicka popularity has soared recently, with two records broken just a few months apart. The Portrait of Marjorie Ferry, an oil on canvas from 1932, became the artist's most expensive work in February 2020, selling for $21.2 million (£16.2 mil).

This sumptuous portrait testifies to the chic and inimitable style of the artist, who left Poland for France and, later, the United States. After the death of her first husband, Lempicka married the aristocrat whom she had first taken as a lover and, because of her new title, was nicknamed 'The Baroness with a brush'. The portrait was commissioned by a wealthy businessman who asked Lempicka to represent his wife Marjorie Ferry, a British cabaret singer – along with the precious cabochon ring he had recently given her.
