jan 1, 1959 - Lee Bontecou, 'Untitled', 1959-60
Description:
Lee Bontecou (b. 1931) was devastated by World War II and in 1959, she began creating her famed sculptures made of steel and embellished with canvas, wires and other found objects. These collage-like compositions, that were meant to be mounted on walls, recalled the horrors of war and challenged the artistic canon of the time. Untitled, from 1959-60, sold for $9.1 million at Christie's in November 2021, a rare example of these sculptures to come to auction.
