sep 22, 1862 - Lincoln Issues Emancipation Proclamation

Description:

President Abraham Lincoln signed off an execcutive order that declared that every slave in the rebellious states “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” While no slaves were actually freed, this document encouraged men to fight for not only the end of slavery, but engage in the battle for human freedom. Former slaves were also grabted permission to enlist in the Union Army.
