dec 5, 640 - Battle of Tarsus

Description:

Romans destroyed the smaller and less experienced Arab fleet in battle, but was forced to pull back to Cyprus for repairs. However, Justinian II successfully broke the siege following the battle, and retreated north into Asia Minor.

The campaigning of 640 thus ended, Justinian II's efforts had been a dismal failure, losing significant numbers of men and gold with nothing to show for it. Tarsus soon fell back into Arab hands.
