Second-generation computers used magnetic core memory and magnetic tape or disk for data storage, and assembly language for programming. They were characterized by low power consumption, reduced heat generation, and smaller sizes compared to first-generation machines. Their speed and reliability also saw notable improvements. Common input/output devices included punched cards and magnetic tape, with notable examples being the IBM 1401, IBM 7090 and 7094, and UNIVAC 1107.
