Description:

gyakuten kenji (lit. "turnabout prosecutor") is a spinoff game that serves to provide fanservice for fans of mitsurugi reiji. the gameplay is different to the main games in the series, featuring a mechanic where the player walks around in the crime scenes to investigate instead of pointing at static screens.

in this game, mitsurugi acts as a detective and solves crimes before they ever reach the courtroom. as a result, he uncovers an international smuggling ring, and befriends ichijō mikumo along the way.

the story begins shortly after the third game, and the events of the game take place over less than three days.

the initial idea for the game was to feature hōzuki akane, a character from ace attorney 1 and 4, following her investigations using her knowledge of forensic science. this was changed because the higher-ups weren't convinced that a game centering her would be successful, and decided to use the concept for a mitsurugi-centric game instead. hōzuki's role in the story was ultimately reduced to a cameo.
