oct 11, 2005 - "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney"
releases in north america for the DS
Description:
this is the first appearance of ace attorney outside of japan. this version of the game features the ability to shout commands into the microphone to progress the story, and a touchscreen to tap prompts instead of using the face buttons. it also features a special bonus chapter intended for people who already played the GBA release, and for newcomers who had no prior knowledge of the rest of the series.
this additional chapter follows phoenix wright defending the chief prosecutor of the state for the murder of a police officer. the story unwinds to reveal that the murder was ultimately a conspiracy by the chief of police to try and cover his tracks for a murder committed several years ago.
because of the attitude towards localization in the united states around this time, all of the names were changed to english ones. the setting was also randomly changed to los angeles, california instead of japan. because of the clashing aesthetics and cultural oddities that were caused by this decision, the fanbase affectionately refers to the setting of ace attorney as "japanifornia." they also had to change all mentions of america to germany to make any of these decisions make sense.
the majority of this game's events take place in 2016. for information on this game's events, refer to that part of the timeline
